Social Studies
Much of a primary child’s experience with social studies involves a multicultural approach to understanding the world using the Harcourt Program. Starting with understanding the self, study expands to the classroom, the school, and the community. Children are introduced to maps and globes and use calendars to locate events in time.

Civics 1a - K-1 students will be able to explain why leaders are important, and will explain why elections are held to choose leaders.
Civics 1b - K-1 students will be able to explain why authority is needed, and will explain how people in authority are responsible to those under the authority.
Civics 2a - K-1 students will explain why people should respect others, and explain how people show respect for others.
Civics 3a - K-1 students will be able to explain the difference between responsibilities, rights, and privileges, and will explain why people have responsibilities as citizens.

Geography 3a - K-1 students will identify how people live in different locations around the world. They will also identify how cultures are similar and different.
Geography 4a - K-1 students will identify types of regions, and explain the difference between places and regions.
History 1a - K-1 students will tell time with a clock (1) and calendar (K). They will also explain how chronological order helps people in daily life.
History 2a - K-1 students will identify artifacts and documents that people used in the past. Students will also identify the differences between artifacts and documents.
